There are more dial-up users in other countries, particularly in America where some households rely almost completely on dial up due to their rural surroundings.
It seems strange but there are actually a lot of reasons to use dial-up, particularly for these people. It is reliable for people in remote areas where mobile phones, dongles and wireless internet simply doesn’t work, not to mention that dial-up is a secure option that runs on a pay as you go system; you’ll only ever pay for what you use providing a much cheaper deal for many of those who don’t use the internet regularly.
If your business praises catering for a worldwide market it doesn’t look very good if you have disregarded a good percentage of your potential audience. It might be surprising to know that 10% of your clients (or more depending on what you’re selling and where you are) could be dial-up users yet you may never have given them a second thought. This may seem like a small amount of people however 10% can make a real difference to your company. This is why businesses and in particular web designers and developers need to think about the limitations of the dial-up user.
Of course if you think about it there are probably just as many people looking at your website from a dial-up internet connection as there are looking at it with their smart TV or games station – yet the majority of web developers have made versions of your webpage or developed the website in a way that will ensure it fits and works properly on those devices. So why not do the same for dial-up users?

Head over to Google Analytics now – go to your websites visitors > network properties and then connection speeds, look at how many of your visitors are on dialup internet. Surprised? The chances are you will be, most companies don’t realize just how many of these users there are.
Dial up users however have a number of setbacks when using the internet including its speed and the fact that it disables their phone line. Dial up also tends to only charge you for what you use, so if they’re on your website they probably don’t want to waste money waiting for your web page to download a load of graphics. If they’re on your website it is because they want something from you, but they can always get it somewhere else.
It isn’t difficult to cater to the needs of a dial-up user; in fact you could be doing it already. If you have a version of your website developed for mobile users you can provide a link to that for low speed users. This is because mobile webpages are usually developed to work on mobile internet, which means higher cost for lower speeds and portability. This will work well enough on a dial-up internet connection.
Of course you will need to keep flash to a minimum and heavy loading content in restricted areas. You could also compress images for faster loading and use a cache to serve the information quicker. This will benefit returning visitors and will encourage other dialup users to return to your website, even if your competitors are offering a better deal.
